How to Connect Smart Devices with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant?

Connecting Smart Devices with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant

This article explores how to connect your smart devices to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, focusing on the methods and capabilities of each platform

Amazon Alexa vs. Google Home

Both Alexa and Google Home offer similar features, such as controlling lights, televisions, and ordering groceries. The choice often comes down to personal preference for the platform and voice assistant.

  • Amazon Alexa: Integrated with Amazon Echo devices, available on smartphones via the Alexa app, and Fire TVs. Responds to a wide range of voice commands.
  • Google Home: A line of smart speakers/hubs including Google Assistant-powered devices like Nest cameras, thermostats, and Chromecast. Provides quick access to Google searches and various commands.

Connecting Google Home to Alexa

You can integrate Alexa and Google Home by adding eligible Google Nest devices (thermostats, cameras, and doorbells) to the Alexa app.

  1. In the Alexa app, select + (Plus) > Device. Alternatively, go to the Devices tab > + (Plus) > Add Device.
  2. Search for your device category or type the device name. Alexa app steps for adding a new device
  3. Follow the setup instructions. For Nest Thermostats, tap Next for guided instructions. Overview of the Google Nest and Alexa setup process in the Alexa app
  4. Enable the Google Nest skill in the Alexa app (via voice command or More > Skills & Games).

Alternatively, you can install the Alexa skill in the Google Home app (Settings > Services > Amazon Alexa skill) for limited control of Nest devices with Alexa.

Using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa with Samsung SmartThings

Samsung SmartThings allows integration with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice control of compatible devices. For security reasons, Alexa only supports Routines with lighting, switches, and thermostats.

Setting up Google Voice: Before controlling SmartThings with Google Assistant, set up Google Voice Match on your phone (Settings > Voice Match).

Connecting Google Assistant to SmartThings:

  1. Launch Google Assistant, open the dashboard, and tap the Options icon.
  2. Tap Devices > Add a device > Link a device > SmartThings.
  3. Sign in to your Samsung account, select your location, and tap Authorize. Link a device highlighted in the SmartThings app
  4. Test with a voice command (e.g., "Turn off the Smart Plug").

Connecting Amazon Alexa to SmartThings:

  1. Set up your Amazon Alexa device and download the Alexa app.
  2. In the Alexa app, tap Devices > YOUR SMART HOME SKILLS > ENABLE SMART HOME SKILLS.
  3. Search for and select SmartThings, tap ENABLE TO USE, and authorize with your Samsung or SmartThings account. Devices tab displaying YOUR SMART HOME SKILLS in the Alexa app
  4. Tap DISCOVER DEVICES to automatically find compatible devices, scenes, and routines. Manually add devices if needed. Devices tab displaying DISCOVER DEVICES in the Alexa app

Controlling Google Nest Products with Amazon Alexa

The Google Nest skill for Alexa allows control of Nest cameras, doorbells, and thermostats. Enable the skill in the Google Home app (Settings > Services > Amazon Alexa skill), then follow on-screen instructions to enable it in the Alexa app. You'll then need to say "Alexa, discover my devices."

Using Alexa and Google Together in Your Smart Home (Reviewed.com)

You can use both Alexa and Google Assistant simultaneously in your smart home. Each assistant responds only to its respective wake word ("Hey Google" and "Alexa"). Pairing both apps with third-party devices is generally straightforward, except for Zigbee-enabled devices (which are being phased out in favor of Matter). Matter will eventually allow both assistants to control the same devices.
